…. is an annual week-long awareness campaign to inform and engage health professionals and the general public about suicide prevention and warning signs of suicide.
By drawing attention to the problem of suicide in the UK, the campaign also strives to reduce the stigma surrounding the topic, as well as encourage the pursuit of mental health assistance and support people who have attempted suicide.
Since 1975, awareness events have been held worldwide throughout the week corresponding to World Suicide Prevention Day, which is recognized annually on the 10th of September.
For the third year in succession, Radio Saltire has been asked to become involved and at noon each weekday commencing Monday 8th. September, Andy Morris will be joined here in the studio by Brian Glass, the Information Officer of the Changes Community Health Project based in Musselburgh and together they will introduce a number of guests who are – or have been directly involved in this most disturbing of subjects.
Their guests will include Healthcare Professionals, members of the public who have been driven to attempt suicide and to family and close friends who have been directly affected.
We will hear how early signs can be detected and what to do if you suspect someone you know may be considering suicide and what help is readily available.
These hour long programmes will be available to hear again on our website following their respective broadcasts.
National Suicide Prevention Week – every weekday at noon right here on Radio Saltire from Monday 8th. September.
