In May 2014 a Knitted Boat will be on show for one week only at the Fisherrow Community Centre, Musselburgh. East Lothian Council Arts Service and The Brunton, Musselburgh are seeking local knitters to help to create a unique one-off exhibition around the boat, ahead of a production of Get Up and Tie Your Fingers at The Brunton in May.

Imagine this – Knitted Sea, Seaweed, crafted Rocks and Pebbles, Crochet, Hooky, Clippy and Crafted Sea Mobiles and a shoal of Herring and much, much more….

The Customs House and The Guild of Lillians from South Shields have created Follow the Herring, a theatre production and art installation that will travel down the East coast of Scotland and England from Musselburgh to Hastings this summer, echoing the journey that the Herring Lassies would have taken when ‘following the herring’ during the 19th century.

The theatre production, Get Up and Tie Your Fingers, looks at the lives of three women against the backdrop of the 1881 Eyemouth Fishing Disaster, still the worst fishing disaster to date in Britain. Beyond the grim toll of the sea, there lies a remarkable tale of endurance, survival and courage of the east coast herring fishing communities.

The exhibition features the Coat for a Boat! project, created back in 2009 by the North East Maritime Trust and the Materialistics, a knitting group from South Tyneside. A full coat was knitted for a 20ft coble which then sailed down the Tyne! The boat has been resurrected and restored. It will be the centrepiece of the exhibition with the scene being set and brought to life by additional knitted pieces created by each town the tour visits.

Local knitters in East Lothian are being asked to contribute to this exhibition by knitting a herring. The company are aiming for 1,000 knitted herring and every herring knitted will be used in the tour. Keen knitters, and other interested participants aged 8 years and over, are invited to attend the first in a series of workshops beginning on Wednesday 26 February at 2pm to 5pm – and any time in between – in venue 2 at The Brunton in Musselburgh.
