A charity that tackles isolation among people with disabilities is expanding into East Lothian.

get2gether has been awarded £50,000 funding from the Scottish Government to support adults across East Lothian with disabilities, supporting them to build confidence as well as skills for developing lasting friendships and relationships.

From ping-pong tournaments to panto and speed dating to club nights, get2gether arranges all kinds of social activities in ordinary places for disabled people.

Thanks to the funding boost, people in East Lothian who have disabilities will be able to get involved. And membership is free.

To launch the service in East Lothian get2gether has teamed up with East Coast FM to host a launch party at the Corn Exchange in Haddington on Friday, 31st July at 7pm.

Since get2gether was set up in Edinburgh in May 2013 many have found friendship, dating and romance at sell out club nights and a range of events.

The growing charity has over 70 members who meet together to go out and have fun in ordinary venues where they might previously not have had the confidence to go alone.

Members are also growing in confidence with some who were nervous about mainstream venues now going out to socialise independently too.

Marion Smith, Project Manager said, “get2gether is a charity that believes love and friendship are basic human rights for all of us, whether we have support needs or not. And that’s why we organise all kinds of activities in ordinary places for our members.”

Sarah Allan, East Lothian Ambassador said, “It’s great to be part of the bringing get2gether to East Lothian. The best part about the charity is that members are right at the heart of it. It’s our members who choose their events and shape what they want out of it. Having that opportunity to meet people in a safe, supportive environment really does make a huge difference to people’s lives.”
