A few weeks ago I played a track that was once very popular on the BBC Light Programme’s famous ‘Children’s Favourite’ radio show. This was a show designed especially for the kids of the time and gave us the opportunity to have requests played on the radio.
The track I refer to was ‘Sparky and the Talking Piano’ and I have had a lot of requests for more of the same – so on Saturday and during the first hour, I will be playing another of the Sparky series – ‘Sparky and the Talking Train’. It’s the one my parents bought for me when I was knee high to a grasshopper so I have very fond memories of it indeed.
Hey – and it was on three double sided ‘78’ records too!
Mmmmmm…The kids today…….
Our ‘Year under the Spotlight’ in the second hour is 1977 – a year that will be remembered as the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Year. It was in 1977 too that Clive Sinclair launched his 2” tv set which sold for an astonishing £175, that the World Snooker Championships moved to a new venue – the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield and was televised for the first time and the year Kenny Dalglish signed for Liverpool from Celtic for £440,000 – becoming Britain’s most expensive player to date.
We were listening to music then from the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart, the Eagles and Leo Sayer.
And last but not least, we will be checking out the top 20 best-selling UK singles in our ‘Vintage Chart’ from exactly 50 years ago – the 28th. March 1965. This week we have new entries from Cliff Richard, the Yardbirds, the Who and Petula Clark.
So tune in at noon on Saturday and rekindle those memories of yesteryear with me, golden oldie Andy Morris and the GREAT Golden Oldies Show.
