L&B Police LogoLothian and Borders Police are launching their Christmas safety drive in East Lothian to ensure local residents have a safe and enjoyable festive season.

At this time of the year, the Police want to ensure that all communities have a safe and merry Christmas. They will be undertaking a range of initiatives to ensure this is the case and would ask that the public assist by taking the necessary steps, whether in preventing crime or drinking responsibly.

Operation Essential

Working with partners, officers will be highlighting issues such as domestic abuse, antisocial behaviour and theft. Under Operation Essential, a dedicated team of officers will be working specifically on housebreaking and theft. As part of this they will go after known offenders and work with partners to raise awareness of the importance of home security to try and deter criminals.

Operation Equinox

In addition, Operation Equinox will see increased patrols in identified hot spot areas targeting anti social behaviour and violence. There will also be dedicated retail initiatives in Haddington and Musselburgh town centres, as well as extra high visibility patrols in other towns. Community Safety officers will carry out a series of road shows highlighting ATM security, safe shopping online and how to avoid falling victim to scams this Christmas.

Drink Driving

The national drink drive campaign is now under way  and local officers will be supporting this through the Winter Safety Roadshows. At these events people will be given information and advice on how to deal with adverse weather, and keeping your car winter ready.

Superintendent Phil O’Kane said:

Everyone is busy in the run up to Christmas, but we want to make sure people in East Lothian enjoy safe, secure Christmas celebrations as it is also one of our busiest times of year.

We will have more officers out and about in our towns and villages over the coming weeks, but are asking people to take steps to avoid falling victim to crime, whether it be keeping personal belongings safe, or drinking sensibly if you’re enjoying a night out.

Information and advice on crime prevention is available on the Lothian and Borders Police website, and I would encourage people to follow the tips provided to make sure they stay safe this Christmas.

Anyone seeking further information or advice regarding personal or home security should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131 and ask to speak to their local crime prevention officer, or consult the website at www.lbp.police.uk.

Security Advice

Locations where community safety officers will be highlighting security issues:
18/12/12 – Tesco, North Berwick (morning)
20/12/12 – Asda, Dunbar (morning)
21/12/12 – Brunton Theatre (12 – 3pm)

House Thefts in Dunbar

Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses and issuing a home security warning following a series of thefts from properties in East Lothian.

Between Thursday 6th and Monday 10th December, seven properties in Dunbar were entered and various high-value goods were stolen.

Items such as tablet computers, laptops, jewellery, cash and cars have been stolen during the incidents which happened at addresses in Steadings Gardens, John Muir Crescent, Winterfield Golf Club, Wilson Road, Muirfield Road, Haddington Road and Thurston Home Farm Cottages.

All of the thefts are believed to have happened overnight and police are urging anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious in these areas recently to come forward.

Local officers will also be out on high-visibility patrol to engage with members of the public and offer crime prevention advice wherever it’s required.

Inspector Bob Rodriguez said:

The victims in all of these thefts have been left devastated at the theft of their property and anyone who can help us trace those responsible is asked to contact police immediately.

With Christmas approaching, many homes are currently full of gifts and other items, which are attractive targets for criminals.

Our communities are reminded to ensure their properties are appropriately secured at all times and that valuable items and stored safely.

Local officers will be issuing crime prevention leaflets in the coming days and weeks, which provide all the necessary information on helping deter crime within your home or workplace.

Anyone who would like further advice can visit the Lothian and Borders Police website at www.lbp.police.uk.

Those with information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
